Is it the only way to build a strong house by reinforced concrete?
No, no, no.

Techniques and materials deeply, naturally rooted in the locality is just telling an answer.

Rusticity and sophistication

Torindo in Ueno, Tokyo 桃林堂 上野店

Wall, partition, screen or window…?

The wall of a corner of a sweets shop has some square openings.

It’s too direct without anything, but we don’t want to close it completely as we’d like to feel softly how it is behind the wall from each side.

We don’t need any complicated or troublesome work. Just hang frames with hooks.

Rusticity coexists with sophistication.

Flames are just hanging on the wall with hooks.

We are now in art-design festive season in Tokyo, many events and seminars are popping up throughout the city.
As I have an appointment with an Italian man and a Cyprian designer, I chose kimono style today to welcome them in autumn colors.

I drop by a Japanese sweets shop to take a rest. Enjoying a small cake in the shape of a kaki and Japanese green and brown tea, a fabric work caught my eyes.

This is the most impressive work in this season for me, more Japanese and familiar fantasy.

We are fine under the sunshine. 晴れの日は心も晴れ晴れ。 Tue. 14 Oct. 2014
Fine day with a strong wind just after a typhoon passed.
Coton shirt, coton pants, socks and flat shoes.

吉の川 大吟醸 Yoshinogawa daiginjo

Yoshinogawa poured by the thin and hard edge of a crystal glass into my mouth.

The typhoon didn’t leave any trouble in my town, sky is clearer, dust has been blown away.

I thought of a bottle of sake, which one of my non-drinking friends from Fukushima gave me in summer.

How did you know my taste, Ryuma?

Baramon kites in Goto Islands, Nagasaki, Japan

Baramon kite by Mr. Yoshida from Goto islands

Baramon kite made by Mr. Yoshida from Goto Islands, Nagasaki, Japan

Getting into a liquor shop at Fukue Island in Goto Islands, virile and energetic colors caught my eyes.

They are Baramon kites. I hear the name is from a word “Baraka” in the islands, means brave and active.

People in Goto pray for children’s health and success, and happiness of the family with the Baramon kite.

Can you see? The demon on the top bites the helmet from the front of the enemy, so we cannot see the face behind the armor.

It shows bravery, they play fair.

I’d love to go back there to see the kites flying in the sky on the last week-end of March.

Sashiko weave of Mikawa cotton

Sashiko weave with Mikawa cotton

simple, warm, strong and soft texture of Sashiko weave with Mikawa cotton

A right, light, strong and proper-sized bag allows me to be active.
The pocket just can keep a slim A4 folder, that’s enough for me.

Sashiko weave(刺し子織) is a simple pattern to realize strong but soft fabric, “looks like” Sashiko patch working but it doesn’t mean the way of stitching, is the name of weaving for this textile. Actually it’s not honey-comb weave but we can feel the similarity when we touch it. It may be becease of the cotton’s character and the process of spinning.

They say

The more you use this bag, the more it gets you.

Yes, the fabric and the technic is based on the making uniforms for Kendo, Judo and Karate. All is in the bag.

the fabric and sewing work, originally used for making uniforms for kendo, judo and karate, is good for a shoulder bag. I can always keep a photo camera in the bag without taking care if I may hit the corner.

The back pocket keeps an A4 folder. I just want to keep a slim folder in A4 size but I don’t need any much wider size to keep thick magazines, books.

It happens to shoot!

Urushi Ball lamp at a corner

Urushi Ball lamp at a nostalgic corner in Ashina

May we have a short shooting in a room?

It is an impervious present, a lot of recommendations come to us.

How can we make a good shot?
No light?
No tripods?

Life has no rehearsal, just try to give full play on the post.

Urushi lacquering in Aizu

beautiful texture of Fuki Urushi, wipe-lacquering of trays made by paulownia wood

Seeing the texture, I hear the dry, light and warm sound of paulownia wood.

The gloss of Uruhi lacquered surface like a piano will be more suitable for formal or special occasions.

By the way, what is the difference between Fuki Urushi: wipe-lacquering and finishing like a piano?
Why does the price of Urushi products have a huge variation?
Norihiro will explain more about the huge world of Urushi in Aizu through his products.

Cute taste, casual use, universal shape and authentic presence…

How rich is the craftsmanship!
